Modals of Ability

We use can and could to talk about our abilities. We use “can” to talk about present abilities and “could” for past abilities.

For example…

I can play the guitar.

Chickens can’t fly.

Mel can cook very well.

I could run very fast when I was young.

Maggie couldn’t write in Russian before the language course.

Tim could play the violin at the age of five.
